The philosopher Arthur Koestler proposed that everything can be seen both as a whole in itself, and simultaneously as a part of a larger whole.  For instance, an atom is a whole that is part of a molecule, which is a whole that is part of a cell, which is a whole that is part of an organ, and so on.  He named these wholes holons, and the nested heirarchy they created a holarchy.
